When it comes to burgers, we all have a favourite. Some are the same and others are worlds apart. We can agree on some and completely disagree on others. Our favourite today may be forgotten tomorrow. Now that’s how we best sum up Melbourne’s burger scene. Johnny calls it ‘The Burger Renaissance‘, I see it more as a movement. How do you see it ?
Remember when Grill’d, Maccas and your local fish and chips use to be the only places you could get your hands on a burger. Try to find burgers now and you’ll be overwhelmed by the amount of options out there.
Too complicated right ? It makes me anxious just looking at that list. They’ve got beef burgers, chicken burgers, fish burgers, donut burgers and burgers stacked so high they don’t even look edible.

When it comes to burgers I usually keep it simple, basic beef patty between two milky buns. As simple as it gets. Johnny on the other hand loves the fat stacks, bizarre combinations and everything the new burger wave has to offer.
Now for that very reason he dragged me all the way up to St Kilda to try out the newly opened Monroe’s Burgers. It was right next door to Lunar Park, I swear the last time I was anywhere near here was probably in 8th grade.
I wasn’t entirely craving burgers but it was a Friday and I was in serious need of a cheat meal. When it comes to cheat meals, nothing beats burgers and milkshakes.

Monroe’s Burgers and Beers sat on the bustling Acland Strip that runs through St Kilda. It was nice walking along the strip on a Friday evening, with the soothing ocean breeze to your side and the fragrant smell of fresh food on the other.
As we walked inside, we instantly felt a different vibe to what we usually expect from the typical burger joint. It was definitely more quiet, calm and slow paced. The dark themed interior, dim lit lights and soft background music made the place perfect for family outings, date nights or even afterwork drinks. Johnny and I loved the atmosphere, it was exactly what we needed to kick start our weekend.

I started off our feast with a Nutella milkshake and Johnny stuck to his boring old lemon lime bitters. How boring!

As we were waiting, we were given a sneak peak of The Dirty Secret. The team was snapping it up in preparations for its release the following week. The Dirty Secret is a 1-week exclusive special combining the two most popular Monroe burgers , ‘Dirty South’ and the ‘Secret Sandwich’.

- Freshly Ground Prime Beef
- Southern Fried Chicken
- 24 Hour Hickory Smoked Beef Brisket
- Streaky Bacon
- American Cheddar
- Chipotle Spiced Pickles
- Honey Barbecue Sauce
- Liquid Cheddar Cheese
- Alabama White Barbeque Sauce
- Milk Buns

Finally it was our turn to start digging into these bad boys. It was going to get real messy up in that joint. My first bite into the milky bun was packed full of flavours. There was so much going on in my mouth, it was almost impossible to process what was happening. Don’t know how to explain it, but if I was sum it up in a word, it would simply be tasty. I loved the way the Alabama white barbecue sauce tied everything in together. From the fried chicken, to the crispy bacon, and even the juicy beef patty. It was a perfect combination of deliciousness.
Do you think you can take on these bad boys? How big is your appetite? We struggled… but Wall of Munchies would never back down from any meal even if it meant we had to go through a food coma all over again!
Now that’s a wrap for today folks, if you’re keen on trying out these juicy stacks make sure to head over to Monroe’s Burgers & Beers!
