St Rose : Our Cafe Date in Essendon

Most of us will never forget our first dates…

Despite our glorious food adventures and countless brunch comas, we weren’t always so glamourous. In fact…you wouldn’t guess where Johnny took me on our first date.

Don’t bother trying to guess this one, you’ll never get it. Seriously. It was a one-time occasion and we’ve never been back since. Not that it was bad or anything, it’s just not our thang.

Let’s make it fun, drop your guesses below and we’ll write a special post with all the details next time ! But for now you’ll have to… keep guessing.

Zomato – Best of Melbourne

We had big plans for this weeks brunch session but the unexpected change in weather made us stay close to home. We were keen for somewhere NEW but at the same time, we were completely out of ideas. Desperate times like this calls for the food bible. Zomato. Every self-acclaimed Melbourne foodie would surely have a copy and if you don’t already have one yet…you better get cracking!

We’d normally start our search by scrolling through the ‘Hottest Brunch Destinations‘ or ‘Most Insta-Worthy Cafes‘ collection. But today we were feeling more badass than usual, we wanted to aim big…we wanted the BEST of Melbourne.

Fine… truth is we actually just ran out of places on all the other lists and so here we are. St Rose caught our eyes right away, they had an insane 4.5 rating and they were just located down the road. Say no more.

We were both feeling like a lazy Sunday so we popped on our comfy clothes and headed straight on down to St Rose. Luckily it was a quick drive or else our tummies wouldn’t be able to hold on any longer.

Johnny had just finished his morning workout so he was more hangry than usual. Thank god parking was easy or else I wouldn’t hear the end of it from him. We parked right in the front, beside the outdoor tables. The cafe was actually super busy considering the gloomy weather outside.

Before I could even tell the waitress we were sitting outside, Johnny had already found himself a seat and helped himself to a menu. Typical. It wasn’t the best of days to be sitting outside but we had to do it for the gram. Come on guys you should know this by now. How many times have I told you… lighting is KING.

Protein Warrior & Oreo Thick Shake

We always like to start off brunch with a favourite drinks. Berry smoothie for him and Oreo shakes for me. We’re so different aren’t we but you know what they say…opposites attract!

The Protein Warrior was so refreshing, topped with a handful of fresh berries and crumbled nuts. I’ll let the picture speak for itself.

My Oreo Thick Shake was extra extra extra thick ! Exactly how I like my shakes, the thicker the better. It even had Oreo bits sprinkled on top. You could tell by now that I have the biggest soft spot for Oreos. I can never turn down anything Oreo related.

Maple Hot Cakes – $17.00
Extra Bacon-$5.00

If you know me then you’ll know that I have the biggest sweet tooth in the world. Literally. If there was a sweet tooth section for the Guinness World Records, I’ll definitely be on it. The dish had such an amazing variety of texture, the crumbled nutty bits combined with the fluffiness of the hot cakes. It was foodgasm all over again.

Salmon & The Rye – $19.00

We were extra hungry so we decided it was best if we ordered three to share. I obviously proposed this because I knew he would be stealing my food otherwise. I needed a savoury dish to balance out the sweetness overload from the hot cakes. Nothing better than seared salmon, poached eggs and crispy hash browns.

We loved the pesto cream cheese sauce that infused everything together. Perfection. Johnny claims he could do better but I’ll let you guys be the judge of that when he ‘tries’.

Acai Bowl – $16.50

Johnny ordered the Acai bowl as per usual. He has a serious Acai addiction. I’ve been telling him to try something else for once, but he won’t budge. Please convince him for me, he needs to spice things up once in awhile.

Besides the fact that he orders Acai bowls every single week, it was so bloody delicious. The most refreshing thing I’ve had all week. To be honest, it’s probably the only time I get my full recommended serving of fruits.

Crunchy nuts and seeds mixed with freshly cut strawberries served together with a fat scoop of peanut butter. What else could you possibly ask for ? Heavenly.

I told you guys that lighting is everything. Look at how beautiful that natural outdoor lighting looks on that spread. Now that’s what we call a proper brunch spread. Maybe not ideal for two but if you’re feeling courageous than why not!

By the end of it we were in another food coma…once again. Luckily it only started raining as soon as we finished. Our brunch date had come to an end, but we will definitely be returning again for round two. St Rose was the perfect date spot for us, great food and amazing vibes!

Dinner dates are getting old, brunch dates should be the new trend. Seriously, let’s get rid of all the formalities and enjoy ourselves a brunch!

Thanks guys for tuning into this week’s brunch date with Johnny and I. Make sure you follow us on Instagram and Zomato, to keep up to date with our latest food adventures. Ciao!
